Running (and Biking) Fool
OR
Triathalon Training - Week 1

Oh my body is tired today. Not sore, really, but it's an effort even to lift my arms. And I didn't hardly use my arms this weekend. That's how tired and weak I am. But I have begun my training.

Saturday I walked 1/2 a mile, ran 2 miles, and walked another 1/2 mile or so. (we must warm and cool down, ya' know) I've been running/walking this routine for most of the summer, but I also took a week off when I went on vacation, and it took my another couple of weeks to get the gumption to go again. So this has been my first week back. And it was HARD. But I did it. Eventually I want to be able to go the whole 3 miles straight running. AND THEN I want to be able to go the 3.1 miles without wishing I was dead at the end of it. I know I'll get there if I keep it up, but the progress is slow. I'm not a natural runner. I get bored and start thinking "I hate this I'm never going to make it my face is going to explode why am I doing this again?" It's hard not to get discouraged that I'm not getting better faster, but I just have to remember, I'm doing well and I'm getting better, and I just need to keep at it.

Sunday I thought "there's no way I'm running again today." I generally don't run two days in a row. I like to give my muscles an in-between day to heal. Everything I've read about building muscles says don't do the same thing two days in a row. That in-between healing day is what makes your muscles stronger. Now I know that running isn't the same as lifting weights, but I AM building muscle. Besides, the few days I have run two days in a row I get really discouraged because I don't have near the energy I do if I skip a day.

SO, no running. But I didn't have anything going on, and I am eager to get with the training program, so I thought "I'll go for a bike ride." I don't find biking nearly as challenging as running. Maybe because the sweat doesn't pour down my face like in running (I don't like to sweat.) So I pulled down my book of city trails and mapped out roughly a 12 mile course. And then I forced myself to turn off the tv (I was watching football. Not even the Seahawks, who aren't playing this weekend. That is how much I was procrastinating!) and got on my bike.

It was kind of fun! And very pretty - it was a gorgeous sunny day in the upper 70's and some of the trails I took went along streams and through the woods. That's one GREAT thing about the Belly. We have some FANTASTIC trails to jog or bike along. Yes it was fun and pretty. And LONG! 12 miles is LONG! I stopped at the Fairhaven bike shop (about 6 miles into my ride) to pump up my tires and I was SWEATING and SHAKING! (boy I wish I had done my tires before I started - it really makes a difference!) But I felt okay and didn't have any problem getting back on again. Something about biking is less difficult than running. Anyway, I got back from my ride and was an UTTER SLOTH for the rest of the day. I literally had to force myself not to take a nap around 5 pm.

But, it will get better. It will get easier. My ass will be less sore, especially after I buy a better bike seat! And having a tired body makes me feel good, cause it's a constant reminder that I kick ass. And it feels like someone's been kicking mine too...

Monday Manners

From the chapter "At Table"....

Don't bend over your plate, or drop your head to get each mouthful. Keep an upright attitude as nearly as you can without being stiff.

This one just kills me, especially in light of the rules we've read recently before. Ok, so I'm not allowed to sit up against the table, and I'm not allowed to protect my lap with my napkin, and I'm supposed to drink my soup from the side of the spoon, but I'm also supposed to sit straight up. Are they TRYING to make me look like a slob? Ae they ensuring that when I stand up after dinner there will be large soup stains on my dress? Man, remind me to wear a floral print next time a go to a fancy dinner - it'll hide the stains!
