Interesting
I've been having a political "discussion" with my brother, the republican. (Yes, Lint, it IS a good thing you never married him!) And this interested me. Even he, a republican, thinks George W. lied about the US's motives for going to war with Iraq. My bro says it's all about economics, about oil. We set up a "friendly" government that owes us a favor or two, and get our barrels at a great price. Nice. What are we spending there? $87 billion? How far would that money have gone toward developing RENEWABLE resources, and advertising campaigns to encourage the culture we live in to value them?
I know the economics of the fuel situation are complicated, but what really disturbs me is that we're not even TRYING to encourage the world to think ahead. Just like we're not even trying to cope with the population problem.
If there's one thing I've learned in my cultural anthropology class, it's that the biggest tool, the biggest sanction a society has in controlling the behavior of its people is cultural approval. There's a lot we could do to encourage behavior that is forward-thinking. Why don't we spend the effort and money there?
Either that, or let's just nuke 'em. Nuke 'em all, I say. That'd solve a lot of problems....

Kudos
Just a note: I'd like to say "Atta Girl" to JBean for a decision and subsequent actions she recently made. Thank you, Lint, for trying to make the world a better place. Thank you for doing what you can. Thank you for taking a stand against cultural and familial pressures, I know it wasn't easy, and believe me, I will always have your back. It's not that I don't think you and J would make good parents. On the contrary, I know you'd make great ones, but I thank you for thinking of your planet first and deciding not to be parents, good or bad. You've made a tough, unselfish choice that benefits us all.
I wish more people would follow your lead.

Baltimore Baby
Well, here I am on the EAST coast, and that's why I'm up blogging at 2:18 AM. Cause it's really only 11:18 PM, but nobody's told the folks over here that. The house is quiet, the turkey is thawing in the fridge, the pumpkin pies are cooling, and a true Thanksgiving dinner WILL be eaten. Just tomorrow, Saturday, not Thursday. But who cares what day we do it, maybe on the east coast, Saturday IS Thursday.
Here's something I don't understand. Why is midnight 12AM? And noon is 12PM. Shouldn't it be the other way around? If it's 11 PM and then it's one hour later, why does the number advance one to 12, but the PM doesn't stick around for the last hour of the day? Why does the AM kick in before the 1 does? If we're going to reset the number to 1, why don't we reset the A/PM thing at the same time? I find it so confusing that I never say 12 AM or PM. I always just say 12 noon, just to be on the safe side. It's crazy.
So, my glasses aren't giving me a headache any more, but now I don't know how often to wear them. My doctor told me not to wear them all the time, and not to wear them at work. So I wear them for driving. But what if I'm not driving, should I wear them if I'm passengering?
My sister-in-law, Wendy, is a beautician. And she's a very good one. Whenever I come to visit I can see her look at me and watch the wheels turning, and I wait, and sooner or later (sooner) she will say "you want me to give you a manicure?" "what would you think if I give you some highlights in your hair?" "you let me do your eyebrows." And, heck, I let her. So today I went into her shop when she was done with her appointments and I got a $120 or so day at the salon for free. She smeared me with warm wax and them triumphantly ripped all the skin off my face, taking with it the suburbs of my brows, leaving the thriving downtown area. She gave me a manicure, and cut and colored my hair. Now I'm a lighter colored brunette with blond chunky streaks. I wanted raspberry streaks, but she talked me out of it. THIS time. It looks good, but it's weird too. I'd still like to try the raspberry.
We watched the Matrix, Reloaded tonight. Not being a fan of the first Matrix, I liked this one about as much. How about the Matrix, Get Loaded? Now that'd be the way to go.
Travelling annoys me. Only because I have to be around so many loud annoying people. Maybe if I was deaf I'd enjoy flying more. Message to children of all ages: SHUT UP! I know I'm cynical, but the problem with kids is that they are TOO LOUD! I just couldn't handle being around that all the time. Don't tell me: oh but if they were yours you'd get used to it. Maybe if parents weren't so deaf from it they'd make sure their kids were using their "indoor voices." Thank god for the earplugs I brought! That was brilliant! Maybe I should start wearing them in the airport too. And in the grocery store...
That and the grody middle-aged man who planted himself right next to me at the airport bar where I was having breakfast, even though the rest of the bar was practically empty. Ok, time to break out my "Go Away" t-shirt. I think my body language is pretty damn loud and clear, facing my body away from him, doing the crossword puzzle, ignoring him, and making very little attempt to be civil. He wasn't content to make stupid comments like "geez, you're not filling that puzzle in very quickly, what's the deal?" (to which I very curtly replied "I'm taking my time."), no he had to continually be DRUMMING on the countertop. SHUT UP!!!! I just want peace! I want to enjoy myself, not be sleezed up to by you! Have a third bloody mary, it's already 8 am...
Ok, but that's behind me. Truly.
So, tomorrow it IS turkey. And then Sunday my bro's taking me to watch the Redskins-Saint's game from his company's corporate suite. Ooh la la! I guess it costs $700 a ticket, and his boss is bringing in a couple grand worth of food. So I suppose I'll slum it in the box for a few hours on Sunday just to keep my bro company....it's the least I can do for family...
I hope you're all enjoying your vacations. I'm having a quite relaxing time. Just the way I like it.

Ouch
I suppose it's normal. I mean, everyone here has told me that it is, but my glasses have given me a headache. I only had them on for about ten minutes today and my head has been aching ever since. My four-eyed friends here at work all say "Oh yes, that's very normal. Your eyes just need to get used to them." So I just hope it's not the prescription, cause I can't afford a new one!

Say Cheese
Oh goody! It's that time of year again! The goody time of year again. The time of year when all our suppliers send us "thank you for your business" presents for Christmas, which usually take the form of either chocolate or cheese. An enormous cheese/sauge gift box just arrived. Excuse me, I think it's time to go start on that holiday weight...

Snacksgiving
Well, I'll be flying off tomorrow morning, at the crap of dawn, to Baltimore to visit my brother and his wife for Thanksgiving.
As I mentioned when I was the AcroJudge on Bet's blog this week, my brother intimated that he didn't especially want to "take the time" to make a turkey for Thanksgiving. After first feeling disappointed that I wasn't going to be able to have the BEST PART of the day, and then feeling guilty if I should insist he make a turkey JUST FOR ME, I hit upon a solution. I emailed him back and said that I understand Thursday will be a busy day, since my plane doesn't get in until 5pm. So why don't we make a turkey dinner on Friday? And I'll cook the turkey. It's not like it's this HUGE big hassle. And it IS the whole reason I'm coming out there. And I think it will be fun! It's not like we have anything else planned anyway.
So, he hasn't emailed me back, but I'm hoping that it'll work out, cause I would REALLY be disappointed if I didn't get any turkey or stuffing or potatoes and gravy.
I can't believe how early I have to get up tomorrow! I should be at the airport at 5:30 am. And then a short plane ride to Seattle and a LONG plane ride to WA DC. Bleh. Why don't they have cots on planes so you can stretch out and sleep? I'll bring my good book, my journal, my discman. What else?
Ok, someone in the office just heated up roast chicken dinner leftovers in the microwave for lunch. DAMN that smells good!

Guilty
Know what I did on Saturday?
I lay on my bed and read my book. All day. I LOVED it! Although I did feel a little bit guilty for being such a lazy ass. But I made up for it by going out with my friends Amy and Sue that night to Le Chat Noir in Fairhaven and eating fondue (oh my GOD it was so YUM!!) and getting all liquored up on vodka crans. FUN!
Sunday I was much more active. I stayed home and watched tv and lounged and sewed a panel for my Christmas Tree skirt and listened to basketball on the radio. Whew, what a work out. I could use a weekend...
