One More Time, Let 'em Hear You Outside

Yes indeed I do rock. Just in case you weren't paying attention. I got 100% on my Biology midterm. Woo hoo! I have 100% in the class, so far. SO, it IS possible to finish first on the test and do the best. I love it.

Yesterday we had lab, where we got to play around with "deshelled" chicken eggs. It was kinda fun. The labs are really great, I love looking at the little squiggly things under the microscope, or making bacteria grow, or soaking naked chicken eggs in different concentrations of solutions, and see which ones gain weight, and which ones lose it.

My mom asked me the other day why I needed to take all these "background" classes "just" to be a dental hygienist. Ok, first, that makes me defensive. I think she doesn't understand the difference between being a hygienist and being a dental assistant. She must think of being a hygienist like being a manicurist or something. Well, lets put it this way: you'd expect a nurse to have to take biology and anatomy and all that, right? Well, a hygienst is to a dentist as a nurse is to a doctor. They administer shots, they identify diseases, they do all the WORK, and then the dentist comes in, takes a look, and says "yep". How much time do you spend with your dentist compared to with your hygienist?

Anyway, it gets my hackles up. My parents, like many of our parents I'm sure, always told me I could be anything I wanted to be. Apparently that doesn't mean that they won't poo-poo it from time to time.

Oh, Did I Mention...

that I rock? Well, in case I forgot. I do. Rock.

I took my biology midterm last night. I don't know what score I got yet, but I DO know that I knew all of the answers to all of the questions, so I'm hoping for a good grade!

AND I was the first one done with the test, which I know doesn't matter (after all, maybe some people get done quickly cause they DON'T know the answers to the questions, so they leave them blank) but I can't help it. I always want to be done first. I want to be done first and do the best. Last time I wasn't done first, but I did the best. This time I was done first, and we'll see how I did. I hope the two aren't mutually exclusive.

Anyway, I thought I'd better let you guys know, in case anyone comes up to you on the street one of these days, or asks you in the break room, or approaches you at the gym. If they ask "Who rocks?" you'll be able to answer confidently "Krizzer does!"

Monday Manners

From the chapter "In Dress and Personal Habits":

Don't wear your hat cocked over your eye, or thrust back upon your head. One method is rowdyish, the other rustic.

Ya hear that Humphrey Bogart? Marlon Brando, you listening?

Proud

I'd just like to announce that today I biked for 25 minutes and then ran for 25 minutes. The biking isn't that bad, but the running, well let me tell you. That's the farthest I've ever run at one time without stopping or walking EVER. 2.5 miles. I'm nearly able to run the whole 3.1 mile triathlon distance!!! AND, you know what? It wasn't that bad. Actually, yesterday my bike/run schedule said 15 minutes each. That's pretty much the same as it's been for the last 2 weeks. But for the first time, yesterday it wasn't that bad! I didn't even feel like crying, quitting, or just whimpering loudly. I got into a groove and felt like, I can do this! I felt like I could just keep going! And today was much the same. Don't get me wrong, after 20 minutes I started feeling pretty fatigued. But I did it! And I feel pretty damn good about it! The point is this: I'm making progress. And it's getting easier. And it hasn't taken as long as I thought!

So far I've found that the "wall" runners refer to is actually a real thing! AND, more importantly, the "second wind" is also a real thing. After the first half mile, I start to feel like I'm in hell, but then, if I stick it out , it actually gets better! That's encouraging to know. I just have to remember that...

I bought new running shoes today. This was a very enjoyable experience for three main reasons:

First, I went to an athletic shoes store, so I had the sales clerk actually wait on me. I said "Bring me all the shoes you recommend. Here is my price range, but I also want to try on the more expensive ones, cause if they really are lots better, I could be convinced." And they did! It was like Pretty Woman. They brought me a stack of shoes. They talked about all the advantages of each shoe. They laced them up, the watched me run up and down the store and told me which ones made my feet run straight, and which ones made me go pigeon-toed. There was plenty of sucking up. It was great!

Second, they were really impressed when they asked what I needed the shoes for and I told them I was running a sprint triathlon. That, my friends, made me feel SO COOL!

Third, the shoes I bought are great. And they were mid-range in price! I tried on all the shoes. I tried on the "best" expensive shoes. And they weren't comfortable! The shoes I got were the best ones I tried on and they were in my price range!

All in all, a very successful and enjoyable shopping experience. And apparently they work! Tomorrow, though, is a rest day. I plan on spending the whole day lounging. In fact, there's a Sonics game on tomorrow at noon. I just might watch it in bed...!
