Ah Wilderness!

Now that we have sprung forward, I have been released from the bonds of the gym. In other words, it is still light enough for me to exercise outside after work now. And yesterday was another beautiful day (we've really been having a fantastic spring!) so instead of treading the mill inside, I went up to Lake Padden to jog around. It's a good run, it's only 2.6 miles, but the back side is rather hilly, and hills are new for me, so it's a good workout. It is the site of the Lake Padden Triathlon, (duh) coming up in June, which I am planning on entering, so it's also good for me to be able to train on the trail I'm going to be racing on in a few months.

The trail around Lake Padden also is a popular walking, dog walking, and biking spot. So of course there were plenty of labs, beagles, dachshunds, and mutts snuffling around. And there were muscular high-school boys in shorts who could run the lake twice in the time it takes me to do it once. There were jogging strollers and little kids on bikes. There were young couples holding hands, there were old people in big huge sunglasses...

...AND there were people talking on their cellphones! I couldn't believe how many people I saw talking on their cellphones!!! I mean, one girl, wearing a tank top and jogging pants and a baseball cap, who really looked like she was about to RUN, took off at a brisk walk, just yapping away on her phone. Off into the woods. I passed her 3 times, yak yak yak all the way around the lake. And she wasn't the only one.

Now, I take my phone with me when I bike. I carry it in the little pouch beneath my seat, and I forget all about it for the most part. It's just nice to know it's there in case I crash or get a flat or something, and I need to call my daddy and have him come pick me up. It's for safety. I don't TALK on it while I'm biking, though. If it rang I'd ignore it. Sorry! I'm busy now!

I just couldn't believe it. I have come to expect to see cellphones at the mall. It doesn't surprise me to see people talking in their cars. It DOES annoy me to see them talking in the store or restaraunt, (in fact last night I was talking to the one and only Stennie on my cell after work, and I actually -if you can believe- WAITED in the car until I was done talking before I went into the mini-mart to buy my "energy water." What a concept!) But I just don't see why you'd drive all the way up to the lake and go walk in the woods if you didn't want to appreciate how beautiful it is, how good the spring smells, the sounds of frickin' nature!! I noticed last night that ducks' wings make a whistling sound when they fly overhead. Did the yapper on the cellphone notice that? NO! Instead she was shouting her phone conversation for all to hear. Ah, peacefull nature.

I wonder what people like her did before cellphones. Was she forced to stay home all the time? Did she know all the best payphones? Was she a prisoner to the landline? Cellular technology must have been like emanicipation. Hallelujah!

On another note: the bald eagles are still hanging out in the tree outside my office window. I think they may have decided to nest here. That'd be rad!

Monday Manners

From the chapter "In Dress and Personal Habits"

Don't wear your hat in a strictly private office. This is no more justifiable than wearing a hat in a drawing-room.

Are we allowed to notice someone's hat in an office?
